Commitment to Sustainability
and Social and Environmental Compliance

Sustainability management

Norte Energia conducts its operations with a focus on environmental sustainability, aligning its operations with the protection and conservation of natural resources, management of the multiple uses of the Xingu River, and fostering sustainable social and economic development in the Amazon.

As part of its ESG agenda, the Company approved its Sustainability Policy in 2021 and established its Human Rights Policy the following year, consolidating guidelines aligned with best environmental, social and governance practices.

The Company's Sustainability Policy is applied comprehensively, involving all areas, from senior leadership to outsourced employees. Its implementation follows a well-defined structure: the guidelines are set by the Board of Directors and are supported by the Sustainability Committee, the Advisory Board and the Sustainability Superintendence unit.

The Advisory Board, comprised of external experts, offers a strategic and independent vision, helping to align the Company's operations with society's expectations and ESG principles.

In 2024, the Sustainable Energy Gold Seal, granted by the Acende Brasil Institute, remained in force. The certification, granted by PwC Contadores Públicos, attests that the social and environmental actions carried out by the Company exceed legal requirements, reflecting efficient and responsible management of sustainability practices.

Strategic pillars of action

Our operations are structured around three fundamental pillars, aligned with our Sustainability Policy: renewable energy, regional social and economic development, and environmental protection of the Amazon.

These pillars underpin the Company's commitment to sustainability, regional development, and environmental preservation, guiding our actions to generate positive and lasting impact, leaving a responsible legacy for future generations.

Geração de energia renovável

Gestão das emissões de gases de efeito estufa;
Combate às mudanças climáticas e advocacy da hidrelétrica como energia renovável;
Transição energética.

Desenvolvimento socioeconômico regional

Promoção do crescimento econômico inclusivo e sustentável;
Fortalecimento de negócios de impacto voltados às cadeias produtivas locais e da bioeconomia;
Atuação junto a povos indígenas, comunidades tradicionais e direitos humanos.

Proteção ambiental da Amazônia

Conservação da floresta e redução do desmatamento;
Recomposição florestal associada à geração de renda;
Monitoramento e proteção da Bacia do rio Xingu.

Human Rights

In 2024, Norte Energia expanded its initiatives aimed at promoting human rights through structured training and prevention actions, targeting both the workforce and the value chain. In October, a general online training on human rights was held, lasting 90 minutes, which reached 80.6% of our direct employees. In addition, specific in-person training sessions were held for strategic areas, with the following participation rates:

  • Social and Environmental Superintendence and Indigenous Component Superintendence units: 87% of direct employees;
  • Sustainability: 100%;
  • People and Management: 90%; and
  • Corporate Security: 90.5% of direct and outsourced employees.

Social and environmental management

The construction and operation of a hydroelectric power complex as large as Belo Monte involves significant transformations, with both positive effects and challenges that are managed through studies, monitoring programs, and control actions. These processes are conducted in alignment with ongoing and transparent dialogue with stakeholders, including indigenous peoples, riverside dwellers, fishermen, local residents, public authorities, environmental licensing agencies, the media, academia, organizations, and civil society representatives.

More than half of the Xingu River Basin comprises indigenous lands and conservation units, and none of these areas were flooded as a result of the construction of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Complex. Protected by law, these areas play a fundamental role in environmental conservation and the preservation of water resources, which are essential for continued energy generation.

From the beginning, we have complied with environmental licensing requirements (GRI 413-2), reaffirming our actions based on transparency, respect for people and the environment, and the sustainable development of the region.
